SMART Training Programme:
Turning AI into Practical Value for SMEs

The SMART training programme is currently taking shape, with partners working closely together to develop a set of modules tailored to the real needs of SMEs. The focus is not just on understanding AI, but on making it useful, practical, and directly applicable in everyday business contexts.

Blending clear explanations with hands-on activities, the programme is designed to help organisations move from curiosity to confidence – equipping managers with the skills they need to explore, test, and implement AI in a meaningful way.

What’s coming next?

Right now, we are developing five core modules, each addressing a key piece of the AI puzzle:

1. AI Foundations, Strategic Foresight & Industry 5.0

This module lays the groundwork – introducing AI in a business context and helping organisations see where it fits into their long-term direction. It also brings in a forward-looking perspective, encouraging more strategic thinking around innovation.

2. Practical AI Applications & Data-Driven Decision-Making

A very hands-on module focused on real use cases. Participants will explore how AI tools can simplify tasks, improve workflows, and support smarter decisions – while learning how to use them critically and effectively.

3. Ethics, Trust & Responsible AI Use

As AI becomes more integrated into business processes, trust becomes essential. This module helps organisations navigate ethical questions, build transparency, and ensure that AI use supports – not challenges – organisational values.

4. Digital Risk Management & Safe AI Adoption

AI brings opportunities, but also new risks. This module focuses on practical ways to identify, understand, and manage those risks – covering areas like data protection, safe tool usage, and compliance.

5. Change Leadership & AI Integration Roadmap

The final module connects everything together, focusing on how to lead change and turn ideas into action. Participants will develop a clear, structured approach to introducing AI within their organisation.

AI Corner: What’s happening at EU level?

At the same time, the broader European landscape is evolving. One of the key developments is the EU AI Act, which sets out a framework for safe and responsible AI use across the EU.

For SMEs, this means that AI is no longer just about innovation – it’s also about awareness, responsibility, and alignment with emerging standards. That’s why these aspects are embedded across the SMART training programme, ensuring that participants are prepared not only to use AI, but to use it well.
